Exploring the Paekākāriki Escarpment Track
Located on the Kāpiti Coast, the Paekākāriki Escarpment Track is a notable section of Te Araroa, connecting Paekākāriki (north end) to Pukerua Bay (south end). This track has become one of the North Island's most recognisable half-day hikes, and an exciting experience with stunning views.
Track Features and Highlights
The track stretches 10 km with a 200-metre climb, making it moderately challenging. It ascends along the side of Paekākāriki Hill, providing sweeping views of the railway line, coastal road, and the Tasman Sea. The terrain is steep in places, with occasional cliff edges and some sections of the track showing moderate wear. Numerous steps, particularly on the southern side of the high point, lack handrails.
The primary attraction of this walk is the breathtaking views, with several lookouts and benches for rest and contemplation. Along the way, you'll encounter a section of coastal kohekohe forest, which is particularly striking when in bloom. Information panels along the track also provide insights into the area's natural and human history. Towards Pukerua Bay, two swing bridges add an element of adventure to the trip.
Practical Tips for Your Walk
The track is largely exposed, so it's best to choose a calm day that isn't too hot. Starting and ending near local railway stations allows you to walk one way and return by train. Walking from north to south is recommended, as the morning sun will be at your back. Plan up to 4 hours to complete the walk, allowing time for photos. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water and snacks.
For those with limited time, consider shorter options such as walking from Paekākāriki to the high point and back, or from Pukerua Bay to the swing bridges or kohekohe forest and back.
How to Get There
To access the track, you can start at either Paekākāriki or Pukerua Bay railway stations. Both stations are located at the track's endpoints, making it easy to plan your journey and to get there from Wellington. By car, take State Highway 1 (the motorway) to either town.
To get the view without the walk, drive up Paekākāriki Hill to the viewpoint. Other superb walks include the Trig Track and Wilkinson Track loop on Kāpiti Island, the Waikanae River Walk and hikes in the Hemi Matenga Reserve.
