Exploring the Scenic Route from Pigeon Bay to Port Levy
Located on the Banks Peninsula, the gravel road from Pigeon Bay to Port Levy is a remote, scenic drive through a picturesque landscape. Port Levy Pigeon Bay Road provides stunning views as it climbs steeply to 500 metres, crossing the ridge below Wild Cattle Hill at 600 metres before descending to sea level at Port Levy, on the north side of the peninsula.
Driving the Remote Port Levy Pigeon Bay Road
Even for those who enjoy remote drives, the 14.4 km Port Levy Pigeon Bay Road is an adventurous option. The road is narrow, winding, and unsealed with multiple blind corners as it climbs steep hillsides. Caution is strongly advised due to limited space to pass oncoming vehicles, and you may need to back up.
The upside is the outstanding views, especially as you climb higher towards the ridge. Additionally, the road is largely traffic-free, so the chances are you will have the route to yourself.
Alternative Routes to Port Levy and Pigeon Bay
If you prefer a sealed road, you can reach Port Levy from Diamond Harbour in Lyttelton Harbour. This route also offers spectacular views without the challenges of a narrow, unsealed road. Alternatively, a longer drive is available via Valley Road, continuing on the metal Western Road from Little River on State Highway 75.
Pigeon Bay is also accessible via Pigeon Road, a sealed road that runs from Summit Road around the Akaroa crater.
How to Get There
To reach Pigeon Bay from Akaroa, take State Highway 75 north past Duvauchelle, then turn north again into Pigeon Bay Road and follow this to the Bay. Continue west around the bay on Holmes Bay Road, which becomes Port Levy Pigeon Bay Road.
Other places to visit from Summit Road include Little Akaloa Bay, Le Bons Bay, Okains Bay, the Okains Museum and Hinewai Reserve.
