Discover the Pourangahau / Mt Robert Viewpoint Track

The Pourangahau / Mt Robert Viewpoint Track in Nelson Lakes National Park provides an accessible way to experience stunning alpine views without a challenging ascent up Pourangahau / Mt Robert. Situated at the Mt Robert high car park, this short 100-metre track gently follows a ridge to a lookout positioned 879 metres above sea level. Here, you can enjoy nearly 360-degree panoramic views.

Breathtaking Views and Scenic Picnic Spots

From this viewpoint, you can admire sweeping vistas over Lake Rotoiti, West Bay, Brunner Peninsula, and Kerr Bay. To the east lies the St Arnaud Range, while the rugged face and summit of Mt Robert rise directly behind you.

The lookout also offers a bird’s-eye view of the Buller River valley extending to the west, as well as the winding road leading up from St Arnaud. This dramatic landscape is easily accessible, and there is ample space to sit and enjoy a picnic while soaking in the scenery.

Track Features and Surroundings

The walk to the viewpoint is mostly open, with several large, splayed beech trees adding character. The car park is located in a picturesque clearing surrounded by mature beech trees and serves as the starting point for longer hikes, such as Paddy’s Track and the Pinchgut Track to the Pourangahau / Mt Robert summit: a 500-metre climb.

How to Get There

To reach the Pourangahau / Mt Robert Viewpoint Track, take Mt Robert Road west from State Highway 63. The road climbs steadily through native forest until you arrive at the Mt Robert car park. The drive takes approximately 15 minutes from St Arnaud with impressive views along the way. However, be prepared for a rough and rutted gravel road.

Also, around Lake Rotoiti, you can walk the Brunner Peninsula Nature Walk and the Honeydew Walk. In St Arnaud, you can visit the Classic Boat Museum.
