Exploring Tapeka Point Track
Tapeka Point Track is a rewarding 20-minute walk in Russell, Bay of Islands, Northland. Starting from Du Fresne Place, this track leads you to the 80-metre-high summit of Tapeka Point. The hike provides stunning views and a glimpse into the area's Māori history
Track Details and Scenic Views
The hike begins with a steep ascent, followed by a series of sharp, undulating ridges. As you approach the peak, you'll encounter a final steep climb. Throughout the walk, you'll be treated to impressive views: to the west, you can see Fraser Rock, while to the east lies Rocky Bay.
Once you reach the grassy summit, you'll enjoy nearly 360-degree panoramic views of the Bay of Islands. However, be cautious of cliffs and steep drops along the track, especially if you're with young children or the weather is poor.
Historical Significance
Tapeka Point is historically significant as the site of the Tapeka pā. As you hike, you'll notice signs of past habitation, including defensive ditches that hint at the area's history. The point is also known as Lovers Leap, named after a Māori legend about two lovers who, unable to marry, chose to leap from the top.
How to Get There
To reach Tapeka Point Track, you can park at the base of the track or nearby at Rocky Bay Reserve or Tapeka Point Beach. From there, it's a short walk to the start of the track at Du Fresne Place.
