Discover Waihi Gorge and Campsite
Waihi Gorge is located in the Waihi River, approximately 15 km north of Geraldine, nestled in the foothills of the Four Peaks Range. There is a basic DOC campsite with a picturesque setting along the riverbank. The river is ideal for Summer swimming and scenic walks year-round. Nearby is the charming township of Woodbury.
Exploring the Gorge
The approach to the campsite is through rural farmland, with a large grass paddock and recent native planting along the fringe. However, as you walk towards the Waihi Gorge, there is a remnant forest featuring kahikatea, mataī, and lowland tōtara trees. A rare stand of lowland tawhairauriki (black beech) also thrives here.
The river is a popular spot for swimming, and you can enjoy walks along its edge. For the more adventurous, crossing the river to explore the dense forest is an option; however, there are no marked trails, so caution is advised.
A Glimpse into Woodbury's History
On your way to the gorge, you will pass through Woodbury, originally known as Waihi Bush. This name reflects the area's history of native forest removal east of the Four Peaks Range. Today, Woodbury is home to a charming café and a unique piece of New Zealand history.
Opposite the café, you'll find a war memorial and the Eleanor Howard Tripp Memorial Library, housed in a small Arts and Crafts-style building. Eleanor Howard Tripp, based at the Orari Gorge Station, was dedicated to providing books and educational resources to station employees. After her death in 1936, the local community built this library to commemorate her life. It is one of only three buildings in New Zealand constructed in memory of a woman.
The library's opening hours are limited, but one room is dedicated to its book collection. In front of the library, there are interesting panels about the local history and the Four Peaks: Devils Peak, Fiery Peak, Waihi Peak, and Tripps Peak, which range from 1,500 to 1,650 metres in height.
A walk along blossom tree-lined Burdon Road from the café will lead you to the historic St Thomas’ Church, built in 1876 from river stone. Nearby, you can also enjoy the sight of a small, picturesque lagoon.
