Exploring Wonga Wonga Beach

Wonga Wonga Beach is a charming, small beach located near the mouth of the Manukau Harbour in Auckland. This secluded spot, accessible from Whatipū, is a peaceful retreat amid scenic surroundings. The beach is ideal for those looking to explore a less-travelled area and enjoy the region’s natural beauty.

Navigating to Wonga Wonga Beach

To reach Wonga Wonga Beach, start at the Whatipū car park. From there, make your way to the main beach. As you approach the stream at the rear of the beach, keep to the left below the cliffs. You will need to pass through the neck between Paratutae Island, which marks the northeast end of the main beach and the entrance to the Manukau Harbour. Wonga Wonga Beach is situated on the north side of this neck.

The Origin of the Name

The origin of the name "Wonga Wonga" is a bit of a mystery. Interestingly, in old English slang, "wonga" means "money". If you have any insights into the name's history, they would be welcome!

Exploring Paratutae Island

You can also walk around the north-facing side of Paratutae Island. This features a large natural rock shelf and remnants of an old wharf, a relic from the past days of kauri logging. The spot is popular for fishing, but caution is advised due to the risk of rogue waves in poor weather.

How to Get There

The drive from Downtown Auckland takes about an hour (40 km), following Huia Road through Cornwallis and Huia. The final stretch on Whatipu Road is narrow, winding, and has a metal surface. Extra care is required.

Other places to visit near Whatipū include Mount Donald McLean, the Omanawanui Track, the Whatipū Caves, and the Gibbons and Muir Tracks.
