Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Track from Tekapo
Starting the Alps 2 Ocean cycle track from Tekapo provides a more accessible alternative to the traditional route beginning at Aoraki Mt Cook. This option eliminates the need for a helicopter ride, though it does not offer the same dramatic views of Aoraki. Instead, it presents a ride through the region's hydroelectric landscape.
Cycling from Tekapo to Lake Pukaki
Cycling from Tekapo to Lake Pukaki, your journey begins in Tekapo, where you will follow the flat Tekapo Canal Road towards Lake Pukaki. This road runs alongside a series of hydro canals specifically constructed to connect the three major natural, but raised, lakes, Tekapo, Pukaki, and Ōhau, to the Waitaki Hydro Scheme in the Waitaki Valley. As you cycle, you'll pass by the Tekapo B Power Station, situated near Lake Pukaki. This route provides an insight into the region's engineering feats and the role of hydroelectric power in New Zealand.
Continuing the Journey
After visiting the Tekapo B Power Station, continue south on Hayman Road. This will lead you to the start of a purpose-built trail that winds around the southern end of Lake Pukaki, eventually reaching the Visitor Centre. This section of the track is a scenic ride with views of the lake and surrounding landscapes.
