Awana Bay on Aotea Great Barrier Island
Located on Aotea Great Barrier Island, Awana Bay is a stunning beach with rugged surf that can easily be missed if you're not paying attention. As you drive north from Claris, you'll catch a brief view of the bay after crossing the point that separates it from Kaitoke Beach. It's worth stopping here to explore this beautiful spot.
Exploring the Beach and Surroundings
Once parked in one of the two small roadside areas, a short track takes you through the dunes to the south end of the beach. You can walk south around the rocks to discover a smaller beach. Walking north takes you along the 600-metre beach to where the Awana Stream flows into the sea, below a 60-metre-high hill. You can follow the stream to reach the campground. You can also reach the campground from the road.
Near the top of the path from the road, there's a picnic table where you can pause and enjoy the view. From this vantage point, you might spot a natural arch to the north. To see it clearly, bring binoculars or a telephoto lens.
When we visited, the surf was rough - much more so than the other ocean-facing beaches on the east coast of the island. However, it is popular for swimming in Summer and suitable for intermediate to expert surfers. The beach is not patrolled, and it is best to swim with the incoming tide.
How to Get There
To reach Awana Bay from Claris, drive north on Hector Snaderson, then Gray Road. The bay is on your right as you cross over the point at the north end of Kaitakoe Beach. It is not well signposted, but there is a small collection of houses along the road. Park in one of the two small areas on the side of the road.
Other places to visit on the east side of the island include Medlands Beach, Windy Canyon and the hike to Mt Hobson, Harataonga Bay, the Loop Track and Whangapoua Beach.
