Discover Big Manly Beach
Big Manly Beach, also known as Waiau Bay, is a favourite destination on the northern side of the Whangaparāoa Peninsula, part of the Hibiscus Coast in Auckland. This 1.3 km stretch of beach curves from east to west, facing the Hauraki Gulf. It provides safe swimming conditions and opportunities for kayaking and sailing.
Beachfront Amenities and Activities
Historically, Waiau Bay was part of the seasonal travel routes of Tāmaki Māori, who fished and collected shellfish along its shores. In later years, it became a popular holiday spot for Aucklanders, maintaining a relaxed, bach-era atmosphere.
Today, Big Manly Beach features a wide beachfront reserve adorned with mature pōhutukawa trees. Facilities include a playground, public toilets, and a sailing club. The beach is particularly popular with locals, especially at low tide when the sands extend far out and the waters remain shallow.
During summer, you can enjoy paddleboarding, windsurfing, and beach cricket. Nearby, Shakespear Regional Park has camping in scenic surroundings, with access to bush and beach walks. The park is also a predator-free sanctuary for native birds.
How to Get There
To reach Big Manly Beach from Downtown Auckland, take State Highway 1 north and exit at Silverdale. Follow Whangaparāoa Road along the peninsula, then turn right onto Laurence Street, which leads directly to the beach.
Nearby, you can also explore Red Beach, Stanmore Bay, Tindalls Beach, Fishermans Rock Reserve and Army Bay.
