Exploring Red Beach

Red Beach is the first beach you encounter when driving into the Hibiscus Coast from Downtown Auckland. Located just south of Ōrewa and a short distance from the Northern Motorway exit at Silverdale, this beach is at the northeast end of the Whangaparāoa Peninsula.

Facing northeast into Whangaparāoa Bay and the Hauraki Gulf, Red Beach is known for its reliable surf and stretches approximately 1 km in length. The beach is patrolled by a long-standing surf lifesaving club during the summer, situated at the north end.

Natural Features and Scenic Walks

Red Beach is framed by cliffs topped with houses at both ends, with a modest stream flowing below the surf lifesaving club. At low tide, wide rock platforms are revealed beneath the cliffs, allowing you to walk south to Puawai Bay and Whale Cove. These areas can also be accessed from Glenelg Reserve on Glenelg Road. However, caution is advised as the smooth rocks can be very slippery when wet.

The beach is named for its reddish-tinged sand and cliffs, a result of the iron-stained rocks from the ancient Waitematā Group geological formation. The deep orange-stained fossilised shell fragments mixed into the sand make Red Beach distinctive. At the high tide line, you'll find mounds of these stained shell fragments mingled with more recent white shell debris. A notable pōhutukawa tree stands on the grass margin halfway along the beach.

Historical and Cultural Significance

Historically, Red Beach was part of the access route for Māori to settlements along the east coast.

In the mid-1900s, as road connections improved, the area became a popular destination for weekenders and holidaymakers. Today, Red Beach is a well-established residential suburb that maintains a laid-back, beachy atmosphere, with houses lining the road above the beach.

A Quieter Alternative to Ōrewa Beach

Red Beach is a five-minute drive from the Ōrewa campground, but a quieter alternative to the longer, busier Ōrewa Beach. Its an appealing spot for those seeking a more relaxed beach experience.

Getting to Red Beach

To reach Red Beach from Downtown Auckland, take the Northern Motorway and exit at Silverdale. Follow the Twin Coast Discovery Highway north, then turn southeast onto Red Beach Road, and continue east onto Bay Street. Alternatively, you can take Whangaparāoa Road and turn north onto Marellen Drive. The beach is well signposted and offers ample parking. Drive time is 30 minuters adn 36 km.

Nearby, you can also explore Stanmore Bay, Big Manly Beach, and Tindalls Beach, all within a 10-minute drive.
