Exploring Tindalls Beach on the Whangaparāoa Peninsula
Tindalls Beach is a quiet, family-friendly destination located northeast of Big Manly Beach on the Whangaparāoa Peninsula. Just over an hour's drive from Downtown Auckland, this 750-metre beach is ideal for those seeking a peaceful retreat. The beach is located on the north side of a narrow peninsula strip, with Matakatia Bay to the south. A large rocky platform, visible at low tide, and a point separate Tindalls from Big Manly Beach. The north end of the beach features cliffs topped by one of the few remaining rural areas on the peninsula's north side.
Activities and Atmosphere
The beach faces northeast toward Waiau Bay and the Hauraki Gulf and is bordered by residential homes. Conditions are sheltered with calm waters, making it a popular spot for swimming, paddleboarding, and relaxed beach days. Historical Significance
Historically, the area was inhabited by Ngāti Kahu and later Ngāti Whātua, who established seasonal fishing settlements to exploit the rich kaimoana in nearby bays. The name Tindalls is thought to originate from an early European farming family who settled in the region.

While Tindalls Beach itself has no facilities, other than toilets, nearby Big Manly and Gulf Harbour have shops and cafes. For those interested in camping, Shakespear Regional Park is less than 10 minutes away. The park has native bush, farm walks, and stunning views over the Hauraki Gulf.
How to Get There
To visit Tindalls Beach from Downtown Auckland, take the northern motorway and exit at Silverdale. Follow the Twin Coast Discovery Highway, then turn onto Whangaparāoa Road. Continue along the peninsula and turn onto Tindalls Bay Drive. Parking is available at the end of Hadley Avenue next to the beach, or you can park on Tindalls Bay Drive and walk from there. The drive takes 42 minutes and is 44 km.
Nearby, you can also visit Red Beach, Stanmore Bay, Army Bay, and wander the cliffs from Fishermans Rock Reserve.
