Exploring the Cossey Massey Loop in Hunua Regional Park
Located at the northwest end of the Hunua Regional Park, the Cossey Massey Loop is a standout half-day hike in the Auckland region. This trail is celebrated for its diverse experiences, with a mix of scenic views, the Cossey Reservoir, native forest, and a visit to the picturesque Hunua Falls.
Trail Highlights and Experience
The Cossey Massey Loop takes approximately three hours to complete, including a stop at Hunua Falls. The hike begins by ascending through Cossey Gorge and crossing the Cossey Reservoir dam. As you walk along the ridge above the dam, you'll be treated to impressive views of the reservoir. The trail meanders through lush native forest, leading you to a group of mature kauri trees near the highest point at 308 metres, an ideal spot for a break. The entire loop involves a climb of about 200 metres.
Starting Points and Considerations
You can begin your hike from the Hunua Falls car park. From there, cross the footbridge and follow the signs. Alternatively, you can park near the Cossey Reservoir Dam. Keep in mind that Hunua Falls is a very popular destination, especially on weekends and public holidays, so plan accordingly.
How to Get There
To reach the Cossey Massey Loop from Downtown Auckland, To reach the falls from Downtown Auckland, take the southern motorway to the Papakura off-ramp. Turn northeast onto Beach Road, which becomes Settlement Road. Then take Hunua Road to the south and follow this all the way to White Road, then Falls Road, with the car park at the end. The drive takes 51 minutes and is 51 km.
