Hunua Falls Loop Track

Exploring Hunua Falls Loop Track

Located in the Hunua Ranges in Auckland, the Hunua Falls Loop Track is a brief yet rewarding walk that provides stunning views of the Hunua Falls. This track is perfect if you have limited time to explore the natural features of the area.

Walking the Track

The walk begins at the Hunua Falls car park. From here, pass through the kauri protection gates and cross the bridge. As you make your way across, take a moment to enjoy the reflection of the falls in the river. Once on the other side, follow the signs leading to the track.

The path includes a short, steep climb with steps that take you through a regenerating native forest. This section of the walk is particularly scenic. A deviation from the main path leads to a high viewpoint offering a panoramic view of the falls. After taking in the view, continue along the loop to return to the bridge.

Additional Viewpoints

At the start of the loop, you can also take a quick detour to a lower viewpoint on the left-hand side of the falls. This spot provides a different perspective and is just a couple of minutes from the main track.

How to Get There

To reach the track from Downtown Auckland, take the southern motorway to the Papakura off-ramp. Turn northeast onto Beach Road, which becomes Settlement Road. Then take Hunua Road to the south and follow this all the way to White Road, then Falls Road, with the car park at the end. To avoid crowds, try visiting outside of sunny weekends and holidays.

From the loop track, you can continue on the Cossey Massey Loop, which is 8 km and takes 3 hours. If you drive south on Hunua Road, you can also access the Wairoa Loop Track, Wairoa Reservoir and the Suspension Bridge Track.
