Ahuriri River Gorge from Ireland Rd Bridge
Located in Canterbury, New Zealand, the Ireland Road Bridge is the ideal spot to take in the stunning views of the Ahuriri River gorge. The gorge is situated in the Ahuriri Valley, where the landscape dramatically narrows for several kilometres between the peaks at the valley's southern end. This natural spectacle is best appreciated from the vantage point of the bridge.
Access and Features of the Bridge
To reach the Ireland Road Bridge, take a short turnoff from Birchwood Road, which is the main route along the valley. A spacious parking area is available in front of the bridge, providing easy access to the best views of the gorge. Although the gate on the far side of the bridge is locked, preventing vehicle access to Ireland Road, the bridge itself remains accessible for pedestrians.
Explore the East Ahuriri Track
If the river is too high to cross safely, the bridge also serves as an entry point to the East Ahuriri Track. This track is part of Te Araroa and leads north to Lake Ōhau. The track offers an excellent opportunity for hikers to explore the surrounding dry mountain tussock landscape of the region.
Getting to Ireland Road Bridge
Access to Birchwood Road is from State Highway 8, located on the southern edge of the Mackenzie Country just before the road begins its ascent to Lindis Pass. Drive along Birdhwood Road for 5 km, and you will see the bridge on your right.
There are many other places to stop and explore in the Ahuriri Valley, including the Ben Avon Wetland, the Birchwod Picnic Area and the Canyon Creek Track.
