Ben Avon Wetland

The Tranquil Ben Avon Wetland

Located in the central part of the Ahuriri Valley, the Ben Avon Wetland is a beautiful, remote destination worth exploring, fed by the Ahuriri River. This area, once part of local sheep stations, remains largely untouched, preserving its natural beauty. The wetland is particularly captivating on a calm, clear day, with golden tussocks and the reflections of surrounding mountains creating a picturesque scene.

Scenic Views and Wildlife

The road curves around the west side of the largest lagoon in the wetland, 717 metres above sea level and close to the edge of the water. Stop anywhere - there is no traffic - to capture the best photographic angle. Looking north across the lagoon is the Barrier Range, with peaks over 2,000 metres. The reflections are best in Winter and Spring, when snow covers the peaks.

The wetland is home to a diverse array of water birds, making it a haven for birdwatchers. Among the species you might encounter is the kakī, or black stilt, an endangered wading bird native to the Mackenzie Country and Waitaki.
