Exploring the Koutu Boulders in Northland

Located near Kauwhare Point in the Hokianga Harbour, Northland, the Koutu Boulders are a fascinating natural attraction. These spherical concretions are similar to those found at Moeraki Beach in Otago, Ward Beach in Marlborough, and Whitecliffs on the Rangitīkei River in Manawatū. Some of the boulders here are among the largest of their kind in New Zealand, making them a remarkable sight for geology enthusiasts and curious travellers alike.

Discovering the Boulders

Although access to the Koutu Boulders is not well-signposted, they are relatively easy to find once you know the way. From State Highway 12, northeast of Opononi, take either end of Koutu Loop Road and then turn onto Waione Road. The car park is immediately on your left, though it may be unmarked. From there, walk to the beach and head north for a few hundred metres until you encounter the first boulders. The area features a good collection of boulders in various states, offering a unique opportunity to observe these natural formations up close.

Reaching Kauwhare Point

For those interested in seeing the largest boulders, continue your walk to Kauwhare Point. Access to this area is dependent on the tide, so plan your visit when the tide is sufficiently out to explore the point safely.

How to Get There

To reach the Koutu Boulders from Opononi, take State Highway 12 northeast to Koutu Loop Road. Follow their road from either end and turn onto Waione Road. The car park is on your left, though it may not be clearly marked. From the car park, walk to the beach and proceed north to find the boulders. The drive is 11 minutes and 9 km. From Auckland, the drive is 4 hours and 268 km.

Other places to visit around Hokianga Harbour include Arai Te Uru / South Head, Rawene, the car ferry to Kohukohu, Magnugnu and Horeke.
