Lake Wardell

Discover the Lake Wardell Campsite

Lake Wardell is a small, picturesque lake located just 2 km along State Highway 8, southwest of Lake Pukaki. This surprisingly quiet spot, with a campsite next to the small lake and among pine trees, lies between the highway and the Pukaki Canal. From there, it is a very short walk up to the canal road, where you can go fishing or cycle in either direction.

Activities and Nearby Attractions

The campsite at Lake Wardell is not only charming but also positioned for exploring the surrounding area. The Pukaki Canal, which borders the lake, is a gateway to the Pukaki Flats. If you head north and cross the canal at the Pukaki Dam and outlet, you can access the flats, a popular golden grass section on the Alps2Ocean Cycle Trail that connects Lake Pukaki to Twizel.

Heading south along the Pukaki Canal Road, you will find Lake Poaka and another campsite. This area offers additional opportunities for outdoor activities and exploration. Continuing south takes you to another small, pretty lake, Loch Cameron. From there, you can head to Twizel and to the flats in reverse for a loop, continue to Lake Ōhau, or explore Lake Ruataniwha and its surrounds.

How to Get There

To reach Lake Wardell, travel 2 km southwest along State Highway 8 from Lake Pukaki. Keep an eye out for the signpost, as it can be easy to miss.

Other places to explore in the region include State Highway 80 to Aoraki, with stops at the Pukaki Boulders and several viewpoints, as well as the Kettle Hole Track overlooking the south end of Lake Pukaki.
