Exploring the Pukaki Boulders Track

Located on the edge of Lake Pukaki, the Pukaki Boulders Track is a short but moderately steep walk that leads to two impressive boulders. One of these boulders is a popular spot for bouldering enthusiasts, while the other provides a scenic place to relax and enjoy views of the golden tussock and the Ben Ohau Range. The boulders are a unique look into the geological history of the region.

Geological Significance of the Boulders

The boulders along the track were carried down from the Southern Alps by the Tasman Glacier over 10,000 years ago. The glacier started to melt and recede, leaving the boulders behind. As you walk up the track, these massive rocks stand out prominently, showcasing the glacier's immense power to transport large, heavy masses from their original mountain locations to this unexpected site, kilometres away.

A similar event carried a huge boulder into Westland near Kumara, and can be seen on a short track around old gold workings.

How to get to the Pukaki Boulders Track

To reach the Pukaki Boulders Track, drive along State Highway 80, Mt Cook Road. The track is situated about five kilometres north of the intersection with State Highway 8.

Nearby, you can visit Kettle Hole Track for another example of a landscape shaped by the retreating glacier. Continue north on the highway to Aoraki Mt Cook to see glaciers and visit the glacial Tasman and Hooker Lakes.
