Exploring Maunganui Bluff Track
Located at the northern end of Ripiro Beach, the Maunganui Bluff Track begins in the small settlement of Aranga Beach on the Kauri Coast, Northland. This track leads you up the striking 459-metre-high volcanic formation of Maunganui Bluff.
As you ascend, you'll navigate a narrow path that climbs 100 metres around the bluff's front, overlooking the surf, passing through a mix of coastal scrub and mature pōhutukawa trees. The views from here are remarkable, with the Tasman Sea crashing against the base of the bluff and Ripiro Beach stretching out below.
Journey Through Coastal Forest
After the initial climb, the track enters a coastal forest where the ground is scattered with rocks and boulders. Follow a steep gully that ascends another 100 metres. The climb then becomes more gradual as you continue through the forest towards a fenceline marking the boundary between the reserve and nearby farm paddocks. Follow this fenceline and the edge of regrowth forest for an additional 250 metres to reach the summit. On a clear day, the summit provides stunning views and is an ideal spot for a picnic.
Extending Your Walk to Waikarā Beach
From the summit, you have the option to walk north to Waitapu Saddle and then descend to Waikarā Beach. Here, you will find a basic campsite by the beach, providing a rustic spot to rest and enjoy the coastal scenery.
How to Get There
To access the Maunganui Bluff Track from Dargaville, head north on State Highway 12. At Aranga Coast Road, turn east and follow the road towards the beach. Just before the beach, park your vehicle on the roadside near he signposted track access sign. The walk to the summit is 2.6 km one way and takes about 1.5 hours, so allow half a day and take a picnic. If you choose to continue to Waikarā Beach, the distance is 5.3 km one way, and takes approximately 5 hours. Remember, you will need to return via the same route.
Other places to visit on the Kauri Coast on the way to Aranga include Baylys Beach, Kai Iwi Lakes, Omamari and the access road to Trounson Kauri Park. To the north is Waipoua Forest.
