Tāne Mahuta: the Tallest Kauri
Located in the heart of Waipoua Forest on Northland's Kauri Coast, Tāne Mahuta stands as New Zealand’s tallest known kauri tree. Estimated to be around 2,000 years old, this majestic tree was first documented in the 1920s during the survey for State Highway 12. Its immense size and historical significance make it a must-see for anyone exploring the region.
The Legend of Tāne
In Māori mythology, Tāne is a significant figure, known as the son of Ranginui, the sky father, and Papatūānuku, the earth mother. Tāne is celebrated for separating his parents, allowing light into the world, and adorning his mother with the forest. As a result, all forest creatures are considered Tāne’s children, adding a layer of cultural depth to your visit.
Walking to Tāne Mahuta
The walk to Tāne Mahuta is a brief and easy stroll, taking less than five minutes. Despite its short length, the path leads you to a breathtaking view of the tree, which dominates the surrounding forest. For a more expansive perspective, continue along the track to reach a second viewing platform.
Note that access is restricted to 9 am to 3 pm due to kauri dieback, a disease that threatens kauri trees.
