Discovering Vivian Falls / Te Wai Heke O Maoa
Vivian Falls / Te Wai Heke O Maoa is a captivating waterfall located in North Waikato. Standing at approximately 12 metres, the falls cascade over a large mass of rocks, creating several tumbling streams. This site is not only visually appealing but also has a great historical story to tell, making it a worthwhile visit.
Historical Significance of the Falls
As you begin your walk to the falls, you'll encounter a sign detailing the story of Maoa, a historical figure who liberated the Waikato people from the tyrannical ruler, Tapaue, said to be addicted to cannibalism, in the 1700s. The falls were on the route he took with his followers to Taupiri, where the battle took place. As a test of courage for his men, Maoa dammed the top of the falls, had his men lie at the bottom, then released the flood. They all proved their courage by remaining where they were till the flood subsided.
The subsequent battle lasted 4 days, and at the end, Te Ruinga, a nephew of Tapaue, also attacked and secured Maoa's victory. Tapaue was so despised that his bones were turned into fish hooks and given to the iwi he had terrified.
The Māori name for the falls, Te Wai Heke O Maoa (the falling waters of Maoa), commemorates these events. By contrast, the origin of the name Vivian is a mystery.
The track to the falls includes a short set of steep steps leading to the base, where you can fully appreciate the natural beauty of the cascading water.
Exploring Harker Reserve
Beyond the falls, the path continues through a farm and into Harker Reserve, an area of native forest gifted to the public by the Harker family in the early 1980s. This route, which takes about an hour each way, ends on Tuakau Bridge Road. The reserve is a quiet forest regrowth and rural environment for those looking to take a break.
