Tuakau Bridge and Les Batkin Reserve

Exploring Tuakau Bridge

Tuakau Bridge, a notable 230-metre structure, spans the Waikato River just south of Tuakau. Constructed in the early 1930s, this Art Deco bridge replaced an older wooden one and is the more westerly of the two northern bridges over the river, with the other located at Mercer near the Waikato Expressway. Its design is particularly photogenic, especially at sunset, making it a favourite spot for photographers.

Discovering Les Batkin Reserve

On the northeast side of Tuakau Bridge, you'll find the expansive Les Batkin Reserve. This mostly grassed park provides river access for boats, a children's playground, and plenty of space for picnics or a game of cricket by the Waikato River. A motor camp is situated just down the road from the reserve. This area, along with Port Waikato, is one of the best public access points on the northern section of the river.

Scenic Routes and Nearby Attractions

After crossing Tuakau Bridge heading south, you can choose to travel west towards Port Waikato or east towards Mercer. The eastern route via the metal Murray Road is particularly scenic. As you journey, the Waikato River flows on your left, while on your right, paddocks are dotted with old kahikatea trees, remnants of what was once a swamp. This road eventually connects with the sealed Mercer Ferry Road, leading you across another bridge to Mercer and back to the Waikato Expressway.

How to Get to Tuakau Bridge

To visit Tuakau Bridge, head south from the town of Tuakau. The bridge is located below the cliff where Alexandra Redoubt sits. If you're travelling from Auckland on the Waikato Expressway, take the Ridge Road exit. Continue southeast on Ridge Road, which becomes Whangarata Road, then turn south onto River Road, which will lead you directly to the bridge and reserve.
