Wenderholm Beach in Wenderholm Regional Park
Wenderholm Beach is located within Wenderholm Regional Park on the Hibiscus Coast of Auckland. The beach stretches along Te Akeake spit from the cliffs beneath Maungatauhoro to the mouth of the Pūhoi River. This is a popular destination, especially for families on holiday or on sunny weekends, thanks to its inviting, safe environment.
Beach Features and Safety
The beach faces east into the Hauraki Gulf, with a gentle slope that causes the tide to recede significantly. This creates a safe swimming environment with generally calm waters and no significant surf. However, at low tide, you will need to walk a distance to reach deeper water.
By contrast, exercise caution near the river mouth, as it has strong tidal currents that make swimming unsafe.
Natural Shade and Relaxation
Along the beach, you will find a fringe of established pōhutukawa trees providing natural shade in the gassy area behind the beach. These trees offer a perfect spot to relax and escape the sun while enjoying the reserve.
Getting to Wenderholm Beach
From Downtown Auckland, take the northern motorway to the Puhoi exit. From there, follow the Twin Coast Discovery Highway north towards Ōrewa. You will see the park entrance after a few minutes. Once inside, you will find parking areas close to the beach.
Within the park, check out Couldrey House and the Te Hikoi Track, part of which lies on Te Araroa.
Other places to visit on this part of the Auckland coast include Mahurangi Regional Park to the north, Waiwera and to the south and Hatfields Beach to the south.
