Discovering Whale Bay in Northland
Whale Bay is a captivating beach located on the Tutukākā Coast in Northland. Known for its pristine white sands and surrounded by native bushland, the beach is framed by striking pōhutukawa trees. This setting creates an ideal spot for safe swimming. Many regard Whale Bay as one of the finest beaches in Northland, and possibly in the entire country.
Due to its small size, it's best to visit outside peak holiday periods to fully enjoy its quiet atmosphere. As there are no facilities available, bring a picnic.
Exploring Whale Bay
Access to Whale Bay is exclusively on foot, requiring a short walk. The main access point is from the car park on Matapouri Road. From here, you can take the Otito Track, a 60-minute loop walk that follows the ridge above the bay. It continues along the cliffs above the coast, through mature bush and puriri trees, then descends to the beach and Matapouri. The track then follows Morrison Road and Ringer Avenue and climbs back up to the ridge above Whale Bay.
How to Get There
To visit Whale Bay from Whangarei, take Ngunguru Road northeast towards Tutukākā. At Ngunguru, the road becomes Matapouri Road and takes you to Matapouri, where it starts climbing the hill above Whale Bay. Continue past Matapouri onto the hill, and after 1 km, you will see the parking area and access track to Whale Bay. This drive takes about 40 minutes and is 36 km
