Exploring Lake Roundabout
Lake Roundabout is a small yet captivating lake located within the Hakatere Conservation Park in Central Canterbury, also known as the Ashburton Lakes. It lies at 660 metres above sea level, about a 1 km walk from nearby Lake Emma, and half a km in a straight line. The lake lies in a wide, relatively flat golden tussockland, overlooked by the 1,829-metre Mt Harper / Mahaanui and the associated mountain range to the southwest.
Its peaceful environment makes it a compelling stop, perhaps even more so than Lake Emma. The lake is also appealing to those interested in fly fishing, which is allowed during the designated season.
Accessing Lake Roundabout
To reach Lake Roundabout, take the short track that begins on the Lake Emma access road. This easy path is about 300 metres long and leads directly to the north side of the lake. There is plenty of room to settle in for a picnic or to try your hand with a rod.
Other lakes to visit in the park include Lake Camp / Otautari, Lake Clearwater, the Māori Lakes and Lake Heron.
