Discovering Paradise

Paradise is a remote and stunning rural area located north of Lake Wakatipu and Glenorchy. Nestled between Mount Alfred and Mount Earnslaw / Pikirakatahi, it connects the Rees Valley and Dart Valley and lies on the edge of Mount Aspiring National Park. One of the highlights of this area is Diamond Lake, situated at the southeast end of Paradise. This lake is a popular spot for trout fishing and has a basic campsite.

A Landscape Shaped by History

In the 1800s, the flats and rolling hills of Paradise were cleared of forest and tussock to make way for sheep and cattle farming. Despite this transformation, the mountain sides remain covered in dense beech forests. On a clear winter day, the snowy, jagged peaks create a striking contrast against the vibrant green pastures, truly living up to the name 'Paradise'.

Origins and Cultural Significance

Originally known as Paradise Flat by early European settlers, the name 'Paradise' is believed to have been inspired by the area's natural beauty. Alfred Duncan, in his 1860 article "Paradise and the Māori" in the Lake Wakatip Mail, attributed the name to the area’s scenic allure. Another theory suggests that the name comes from the paradise shelducks found in the region.

Paradise's captivating landscapes have also made it a sought-after location for films such as The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Wolverine, The Lovely Bones, and The Chronicles of Narnia.

Exploring Paradise

As you drive through Paradise, you'll encounter a sign marking the area, a popular spot for travellers to leave stickers from around the world. Nearby, several buildings owned by Paradise Trust can be found, along with a walking track. Although the track is open to the public, it is unmarked. Directions, maps, and accommodation options are available through the trust website.

Getting to Paradise

Paradise is a 25-minute drive from Glenorchy, en route to the Dart Valley and Dart Track in Mount Aspiring National Park. The road from Glenorchy to the intersection with Priory Road is sealed. From there, continue straight on gravel Paradise Road, which is generally well-maintained. The drive to Paradise from Glenorchy is 23 minutes, 17.3 km.

From Paradise, you can continue to Mt Aspiring National Park and the Dart Valley. The road becomes rougher, with several fords as you approach the national park. While a 2WD vehicle can manage the journey, extra caution is advised.

Other places to visit around the region include Glenorchy Lagoon, Diamond Creek, Kinloch and the head of the Routeburn Track, from which you can do a day walk to Routeburn Falls.
