Discover Rangatira Bay on Kāpiti Island

Rangatira Bay, located on the north side of Rangatira Point, is the primary landing spot for those visiting Kāpiti Island. This area is both the gateway to the island and the site of the visitor shelter. From here, you can hike on two distinct walking trails, the Trig Track and the Wilkinson Track, leading to the summit of Tuteremoana.

Upon arrival at the bay by boat, a short walk leads you from the beach drop-off to the visitor shelter. After completing the main walks, you will have the opportunity to enjoy easy loop tracks and the beach.

Explore the Beach and Surroundings

The beach at Rangatira Bay stretches for 400 metres and features a mix of gravel and sand. Situated on the island's east side, the bay is relatively sheltered, making it a safe spot for swimming.

You can explore the bay and the adjacent area on the Rangatira Loop Track and a second connected loop track that includes the beach. As you wander, you might come across driftwood and paua shells, but remember that Kāpiti Island is a nature reserve and removing any items is prohibited.

How to Get to Rangatira Bay

To reach Rangatira Bay, you will need to use a boat service from Paraparaumu to Kāpiti Island.

Other options for exploration around the Kāpiti Coast include Waikanae Beach, Waikanae Estuary and the Waikanae River Track.
