Discover Te Ara Hura on Waiheke Island

Te Ara Hura, meaning "Discover the Way," is an 87-kilometre trail loop that encircles much of Waiheke Island. Located in Auckland, this trail offers a unique opportunity to explore the island's diverse landscapes over 4 to 6 days. However, you can also enjoy shorter walks ranging from one to several hours. Along the way, you can visit local wineries, restaurants, and cafés and connect with public transport.

Starting Your Journey at Matiatia Bay

The trail begins at Matiatia Bay, near the Ferry Terminal on the eastern end of Waiheke Island. From here, you can head northwest or southwest; both routes lead to Oneroa. If you opt for the northwest path, be mindful of the tides, as you need at least an hour on either side of high tide to navigate the start of the track without getting wet.

Coastal Views and Historical Sites

The trail, a mix of grass and dirt, hugs the coastline with stunning views of the Hauraki Gulf. As you walk, you'll see Motutapu and Rangitoto to the west, Rakino to the northwest, and the Noises to the north. Along the way, you'll pass the historic Mokemoke Pā site and several architecturally significant modern homes. Be cautious of steep drops, especially if you're with small children.

Scenic Owhanake Bay

As you reach the northwestern point of the trail, you'll be rewarded with views of the picturesque Owhanake Bay, known for its sandy beach. You can continue to explore smaller bays along the north coast or follow Korora Road east to Big Oneroa Beach. Plan your walk for good weather and allocate about 90 minutes to two hours for this section.

Getting to Te Ara Hura

To start your adventure on Te Ara Hura, take a ferry from Downtown Auckland to Matiatia Bay. The trailhead is located near the Ferry Terminal.

Other places to visit on Waiheke include Palm Beach, Onetangi, Stony Batter, Hooks Bay, Man o’War Bay and Whakanewha Regional Park.
