Discovering Big Oneroa Beach on Waiheke Island

Big Oneroa Beach, meaning "Long Beach," stretches for 1 kilometre and is the main beach in Oneroa Bay on Waiheke Island. Situated directly below the Oneroa town centre, this beach is a popular destination for its inviting white sands and safe swimming conditions. The beach's north-facing position ensures plenty of sunshine, making it an ideal spot for a day by the sea.

Beach Features and Activities

The beach features several amenities, including toilets, changing rooms, and picnic tables, along its edge. Some trees provide shade, offering a respite from the sun. For those interested in exploring further, you can walk around the rocks from the east end of the beach to reach Little Oneroa Beach at low tide. Alternatively, a track over the hill connects the two beaches. A short bush walk is also available at the northwest end of Big Oneroa Beach.

Exploring the Surrounding Area

On a pleasant summer day, Big Oneroa Beach can become quite busy. If you're looking for alternatives, you might consider taking a bus to nearby Palm Beach or Onetangi. Another option is to walk west along Korora Road to Owhanake Bay. For those interested in hiking, Te Ara Hura trail runs along Big Oneroa Beach, continuing to Little Oneroa Beach and further northeast to Palm Beach and Onetangi.

How to Get There

Access to Big Oneroa Beach is straightforward. From the Waiheke ferry terminal, it is a short bus ride or a 20-minute walk to Oneroa. From the town centre, by car, you can drive down Puriri Road to Beach Parade at the east end of the town centre or take Korora Road at the west end, which also provides a boat ramp. If you're on foot, several right-of-way paths lead from the town centre directly to the beach.

Other places to visit on Waiheke Island include Stony Batter, Hooks Bay, Man o’War Bay and Whakanewha Regional Park.
