Explore Waimanu Lagoon

Waimanu Lagoon is a wetland located near the mouth of the Waikanae River on the Kāpiti Coast, between Paraparaumu and Waikanae. It forms part of a larger seabird sanctuary and is bordered by walking tracks that connect to the Waikanae River Track and the expansive beaches of the Tasman Sea. The walk around the lagoon is short, flat, and family-friendly.

A Wetland Haven for Birds

This lagoon and its surrounding estuary are a haven for a diverse array of birdlife. You can spot kōtuku-ngutupapa (royal spoonbills), kawau (shags), tōrea (oystercatchers), kōtuku (herons), and weweia (dabchicks) feeding in the shallow waters. Pīwakawaka are frequently seen along the track, and the estuary serves as a crucial stopover for migratory birds. The name Waimanu, meaning "waters of the bird," underscores its importance as a wildlife habitat.

Paths, Bridges, and Te Araroa

Walking paths line both sides of the Waikanae River and the lagoon, connected by a bridge that leads to the lagoon’s eastern side. The track is also part of Te Araroa. From the bridge, you can enjoy sweeping views of the lagoon, the river mouth, and Kāpiti Island on the horizon. The area provides easy access to the beach, allowing you to combine estuary and coastal walks.

Sunsets and Community Care

At sunset, the lagoon's still waters reflect the evening sky, while the surrounding dunes and hills glow with a golden hue. Local volunteers and kaitiaki have been actively planting native shrubs and small trees around the lagoon, enhancing both the birdlife and the walking experience.
