Exploring Waikanae Sandspit

Located on the Kāpiti Coast, the Waikanae Sandspit is a wind-sculpted dune area at the southern end of Waikanae Beach. This natural reserve, with shifting sands, protects the text and the coastal lagoons around the mouth of the Waikane River. The area is a sanctuary for seabirds with expansive views across towards Kāpiti Island.

A Landscape of Sand and Water

Extending north from the Waikanae River, the sandspit forms a sheltered lagoon and estuary that contrasts with the open Tasman Sea. The wind-shaped dunes create a sense of wilderness and remoteness, despite the proximity to Waikanae. You can explore the area starting from the southern end of Tutere Street, along the beach, or via the Waikanae River Track, which also connects to the northeastern side of the estuary.

Birdlife and Natural Values

As part of a Department of Conservation scientific reserve, the Waikanae Sandspit is one of the premier birdwatching locations on the Kāpiti Coast. It is common to spot royal spoonbills, herons, terns, dotterels, oystercatchers, and shags feeding and roosting around the sandbanks and lagoon.

The estuary is a vital habitat for both migratory and endemic species, with its sheltered waters teeming with fish and shellfish. Conservation groups and local kaitiaki actively work to protect this environment from invasive predators and human impact.

Sunsets and Views to Kāpiti Island

The sandspit offers sweeping coastal views, with Kāpiti Island silhouetted to the west. At sunset, the sky often bursts with vivid colours, reflecting across the lagoon and river. It is a picturesque spot for photographers and walkers alike.
