Alps 2 Ocean from Kurow to Duntroon
The Alps 2 Ocean cycle trail is a purpose-built route that runs from Aoraki Mt Cook or Tekapo in the Mackenzie Country, down the Waitaki Valley to Ōamaru on the Pacific Coast. It typically takes 5 days, and the final section starts in Kurow in the Waitaki Valley.
Starting in Kurow, you will follow the Waitaki River, crossing Kurow Creek, and riding alongside the highway. The trail leads through a winery and along the Waitaki Haul Road. You have the option to detour to the Takiroa Māori rock art site or continue along the trail back to the Waitaki River. The path then takes you through the Duntroon Wetlands, eventually reaching the centre of Duntroon. Here, you can visit the Vanished World Centre, known for its fossil collections, and explore nearby Māori rock carvings.
Explore Unique Rock Formations and Ancient Fossils
From Duntroon, the trail heads southwest to the remarkable Elephant Rocks, known for their distinctive shapes. Continuing on Prydes Gully Rd, the trail takes you off-road through Island Cliff, an area surrounded by limestone escarpments that house the protected ancient whale fossils at Anatini. These rocky sections are a highlight of the trail, with a glimpse into the region's geological history.
The Rakis Railway Tunnel to Oamaru Gardens
The trail then follows back roads to the Rakis Railway Tunnel, which features a toilet and picnic spot. The tunnel, over 100 metres long with a bend, can be quite dark, so carrying a torch is advisable. From there, the route follows the old railway line to Windsor, then heads through rolling green farmland to Enfield and Weston, before descending via a sealed cycleway to Ōamaru via the Ōamaru Public Gardens. Finally, after 5 days of cycling, it ends next to the wharf in Friendly Bay.
