Exploring the Kinloch Nature Walk

Located near Kinloch on the northwest shore of Lake Wakatipu, the Kinloch Nature Walk is an inviting and easy trail that takes you through mainly regrowth beech forest. This walk provides a peaceful escape into nature, with opportunities to enjoy the serene lake views and observe local wildlife.

Walking the Track

To begin the Kinloch Nature Walk, head south along Greenstone Station Road for a few minutes until you spot a track marker. The path is straightforward, guiding you through the forest between the lake and the road. The walk to Todd’s Cottage takes approximately 20 minutes. Along the way, you can access the lake shore, which features rocky areas with low-hanging tree branches and sections covered in driftwood.

At the end of the walk, you'll find a small grassy point with a stony beach, a pier, and the historic Todd’s Cottage. A driftwood chair in front of the cottage adds a touch of curiosity to the scene. The views across Lake Wakatipu to the Richardson Mountains are particularly striking. While you can return along the same path, consider taking the gravel Greenstone Station Road back. This route has minimal traffic and showcases some of the most impressive beech trees. During the right season, you might also spot various fungi.

Wildlife and Natural Features

The forest section of the Kinloch Nature Walk is rich in birdlife. Keep an eye out for piwakawaka (fantails) and korimako (bellbirds), which are especially prominent in this area.
