Ō Whata / Renton Beach's Fossils
Located on the western edge of the Ihumātao Peninsula in Māngere on the Manukau Harbour, just 4 km northwest of Auckland Airport, Ō Whata / Renton Beach has a unique, rich geological history. This secluded black-sand beach is not only a scenic spot but also a fascinating site for those interested in ancient natural history. It features fossilised tree trunks, including kauri. While these fossils are visually striking, they remain less known than those at Fossil Point in Takapuna and the fossilised forest at Curio Bay in the Catlins, the bottom of the South Island.
Exploring the Fossilised Trees
At low tide, you can explore the beach along the edge of the Manuaku Harbour and observe two distinct periods of tree fossilisation. The eroded coastal shelf reveals fossils both in the cliffs and embedded in the tidal sandstone. The cliff-bound fossils, dating back 90,000 years, are remnants of a podocarp forest. In contrast, the larger kauri trunks exposed at low tide are hundreds of thousands of years old. These fossils are protected, and any removal or damage is strictly prohibited.
Cultural Significance and History
Historically, this coastline supported Māori kāinga (settlements) that benefited from access to kai moana (seafood) and fresh water. The name Ō Whata, meaning “storage platforms” or “elevated food stores,” indicates the area's use for gathering and storing seasonal food supplies. Evidence of Māori occupation, such as middens and gardens, has been found nearby, connecting the beach to the broader history of Ihumātao and Māngere Mountain.
Birdwatching Opportunities
Renton Beach is also a prime location for birdwatching, particularly during seasonal migrations. Herons, stilts, and godwits are common sights, and the area has seen an increase in kōtuku ngutupapa (royal spoonbills) as harbour water quality has improved. In Spring and Summer, you can spot their long white silhouettes feeding in the shallows.
Getting to Ō Whata / Renton Beach
To get to Ō Whata / Renton Beach from Downtown Auckland, take the western motorway, then the eastern motorway towards Mangere. Continue to George Bolt Memorial Drive, then head west onto Ihumatao Road. Continue until you reach Renton Road on the right. Drive to the end of Renton Road to the car park, with steps down to the beach below the cliffs. The fossils are easily found at low tide.
Nearby, you can visit Maunga-taketake / Elletts Beach, Ōtuataua Stonefields, then continue on the Watercare Coastal Walkway to Puketutu Island, Māngere Lagoon and Ambury Regional Park.
