Discover Kiwi Esplanade Road in Auckland
Kiwi Esplanade Road, located between Ngā Hau Māngere Bridge and Ambury Regional Park, is one of Auckland's most scenic urban routes for walking and cycling. Situated north of Māngere Mountain in Auckland, this quiet road is lined with pōhutukawa trees and grassy reserves, with views of tidal life along the Manukau Harbour. It's a popular spot for locals to enjoy the sea breeze, observe shorebirds, and connect with nature, all just minutes from home.
A Journey Through History and Nature
Kiwi Esplanade Road starts at the southern foot of Ngā Hau Māngere Bridge and extends west along the edge of the Māngere Bridge suburb and the Manukau Harbour. You can reach it by bike, car, or on foot from the bridge or Coronation Road. Parking is available along the esplanade, particularly near the bridge and Ambury Regional Park entrance at the end of the road. The road is mostly flat and shared with vehicles, but traffic is generally light, making it accessible for cyclists and pedestrians.
Kiwi Esplanade Road is steeped in history, tracing a coastline that has evolved over time. Once a natural route for waka with safe landing spots, the harbour was rich in fisheries and shellfish beds. Middens along the foreshore indicate long-standing Māori occupation. Although parts of the coast were reclaimed or developed in recent decades, efforts by the Auckland City Council and Watercare are restoring the area to a more natural state.
Wildlife and Scenic Views
The road features several small parks and water access points. At low tide, expansive mudflats appear, attracting flocks of wading birds. The kōtuku ngutupapa (royal spoonbill), with its distinctive white plumage and spatulate bill, is increasingly common here, a sign of improving water quality. Interpretation panels provide insights into the estuarine ecosystem and birdlife, and there are spots to pause and enjoy views across the harbour towards Hillsborough and the Waitākere Ranges.
How to Get There
From Downtown Auckland, take the western motorway to the eastern motorway junction. Head south at the Junction (State Highway 20), then continue towards Mangere. Take the first off-ramp onto Mahunga Drive and head west under the bridge on Rimu Road. At Coronation Road, turn north, which takes you to Kiwi Explanade Road.
Other places to explore along the Mangere coast include the Watercare Coastal Walkway, which links Ambury Regional Park to Māngere Lagoon, Puketutu Island, Ōtuataua Stonefields, Maunga-taketake / Elletts Beach and Ō Whata / Renton Beach.
