Ngā Hau Māngere Bridge

Discover Ngā Hau Māngere Bridge in Auckland

Ngā Hau Māngere Bridge spans the narrows between Manukau Harbour and Māngere Inlet in Auckland, linking the suburbs of Onehunga and Māngere Bridge. Opened in 2022, this impressive structure is designed for pedestrians and cyclists, with sweeping views of the Manukau Harbour. With its wide decks, seating areas, and vistas of Māngere Mountain, Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill, and the Waitākere Ranges, it serves as an ideal starting point for exploring the coastal edge of the harbour. The bridge is also a favoured spot for fishing.

Historical and Cultural Significance

The name Ngā Hau Māngere translates to "the gentle breezes of Māngere," reflecting the area's natural environment, sheltered by Māngere Mountain. Historically, this narrow stretch of the Tāmaki Isthmus was a vital passage for Māori, facilitating the movement of waka between the east and west coasts of the North Island. The harbour was also a rich source of food and resources.

The original Māngere Bridge, constructed in the 1870s, was replaced by a concrete bridge in the early 1900s. For many years, this increasingly inadequate structure was the primary route connecting Māngere and Auckland Airport to central Auckland. Eventually, a motorway bridge was built to carry road traffic, and many years later, Ngā Hau Māngere was constructed to replace the old bridge for pedestrians and cyclists.

The modern bridge features an elegant design, carved Māori motifs, and bilingual signage that shares the local stories of Te Ahiwaru and Ngāti Whātua iwi.

Environmental Restoration and Wildlife

The harbour and inlet, once heavily polluted, have experienced a revival in marine and bird life. This resurgence is partly due to restoration efforts by Watercare’s Central Interceptor project, which is cleaning up stormwater and wastewater flows. From the bridge, you can admire the upper reaches of the Manukau Harbour, especially beautiful on a calm day.

The harbour now serves as a crucial feeding ground for various wading birds, including kōtuku ngutupapa (royal spoonbill), pied stilts, and godwits. Visiting the bridge at low tide is a chance to observe these birds on the mudflats below, searching for food with careful precision.

The bridge is also a prime location to watch the sunset over the harbour and the Waitākere Ranges.

How to Get There

To access Ngā Hau Māngere Bridge from the Onehunga side, you can take a path from the south end of Onehunga Mall or Onehunga Harbour Road, or follow the Waikaraka Cycleway along the northeastern side of the harbour. On the Māngere side, the bridge connects to Kiwi Esplanade Road, which traces the shoreline of the harbour to Ambury Regional Park.

Other places to explore around the Manukau Harbour include the Watercare Coastal Walkway, Puketutu Island and Māngere Lagoon, Ōtuataua Stonefields, Maunga-taketake / Ellett’s Beach and Ō Whata / Renton Beach.
